When we think about improving our finances, we often imagine huge sacrifices or winning the lottery. But the reality is much simpler: your financial life changes when your habits change.

Having healthy financial habits means adopting simple yet consistent practices that help keep your finances in order.

These 10  financial habits, when applied consistently, will completely transform your relationship with money.

1. Establish clear and realistic financial goals

Setting SMART financial goals is essential to guide your savings and investment efforts. Set goals you can achieve.  This will  increase your motivation and financial discipline, whether it's saving for travel, to make a purchase , or even your children's school fees.

2. Keep track of your monthly expenses

Knowing exactly how much money comes in, how much goes out of your pocket, and on what expense the money is spent, is key. Keep track of all your expenses and classify them as fixed (need), variable (want), and discretionary (others).

The way you keep track of it will depend on you, but the important thing is that you get into the habit of doing it. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep track of your expenses

  • Apps: There are plenty of apps for your mobile devices that will help you track your expenses and keep your accounts in order.
  • Excel: Excel remains one of the most useful tools for budgeting. It's very helpful for people with basic spreadsheet knowledge.
  • Paper and pencil: This is the simplest way to make a budget; writing every single expense down the minute they are made.

3. Avoid bad debt

Bad debt is debt that doesn't generate any returns. It's the kind of debt you incur when buying items or goods that aren't necessary for your daily life e.g items that have a short lifespan, or depreciate quickly. Debt has a psychological effect that works against the debtor, so the best thing to do is to avoid bad debt at all costs.

4. Spend less than you earn

Earning more money doesn't guarantee financial stability. Often, when income increases, so do your expenses. Avoid letting your expenses exceed your income and don't let your lifestyle increase at the same rate. When your income increases, use it to save, invest, or pay off debt.

5. Spend wisely (not impulsively)

Practice conscious consumption, always evaluating the real need for each purchase. Avoid impulse buying and prioritize investing in meaningful experiences instead.

Think: what is the real need for this purchase in my daily life? If the answer is not satisfactory, perhaps it is not something you should buy.

6. Create an emergency fund

An emergency fund is a financial reserve for unexpected events, equivalent to at least three to six months of your monthly expenses. Having one provides financial security for you, in case of unemployment, illness, or other emergencies.

7. Learn to compare prices before paying for a product/service

Research and compare prices before making a big purchase. This can save you money and ensure you get the best value for your investment.

From your smartphone, you can search online stores, read reviews from other consumers and, based on all this information, make a decision about what you want to buy.

8. Think and plan for the future

Earning a lot of money doesn't mean being financially free. History is full of cases of people who earn millions a year and then lose it all overnight. Why? Because they failed to plan. An example is Emmanuel Eboué, whose poor financial and legal planning saw him go from a London mansion to sleeping on a friend’s floor.

To avoid future financial problems, you should plan by setting aside savings to build capital and invest when necessary, and avoid going into debt.

9. Look for opportunities to earn more

A simple way to do this is to get rid of unused items by selling what's still in good condition. Besides freeing up space, you can generate extra income that can be directed towards important financial goals.

In addition, you can also look for investment opportunities that generate constant income such as starting an online business, investing in the stock market, mutual funds, among many other options.

Note however that  all investments involve some form of  risks. Your goal is to  find the right way to put your money to work, and create multiple streams of income to improve your life.

10. Study finance

Read books related to finance, take courses, and educate yourself on anything you find complicated so you can understand it better. The more you understand about finance, the more conscious you become when it comes to spending, saving, or investing money.

Seeking information doesn't just mean reading books or taking complex courses. You can start by consuming content online. The finance guide section of our blog has a variety of content that can help you better manage your money.

In conclusion, you don't need to implement these habits all at once. Start with one habit and make it part of your routine. Personal finances aren't transformed by heroic actions, but by small decisions repeated every day.
