Across Kenya's cities and towns, Boda Boda riders are the lifeblood of mobility, ferrying passengers, delivering goods, and keeping commerce moving. Yet behind every ride is a rider making their living one trip at a time, with variable daily income and no access to traditional vehicle financing. For these Every Day Earners, the shift to electric mobility - despite offering significant cost savings - has remained financially out of reach. M-KOPA is changing that equation.

Through flexible financing aligned to riders' daily cashflows and comprehensive customer protections, M-KOPA has now financed over 5,000 electric motorbikes across Kenya, enabling riders to transition to cleaner, more profitable transport. Launched as part of M-KOPA's commitment to climate-responsible growth, e-motorbike financing is helping Every Day Earners cut operating costs, improve earnings, and reduce emissions while strengthening Kenya's transition toward sustainable mobility.

Lower Costs. Higher Earnings. Immediate Impact.

The Kenya Impact Report highlights the powerful financial gains: riders save an average of KES 730 per day through reduced fuel spending, fewer repairs, and efficient battery swaps. The benefits go beyond savings: 66% of riders report earning more since switching to electric mobility; 47% can now afford essential household expenses, and 41% are investing in their children's education.

Brian Njao, General Manager – M-KOPA Mobility, said: "Kenya's e-mobility shift removes the 'green vs. income' trade-off. With M-KOPA Mobility, riders cut operating costs by up to 75%, often putting KES 300 a day into school fees, healthcare, and small businesses. In a market of roughly 22 million rides a day, every e-motorbike we finance means thousands of clean trips and higher take-home pay. As we scale to thousands more riders, Kenya sets the pace for Africa's EV transition without leaving Every Day Earners behind."

Making E-Mobility Accessible Through Innovative Financing

Boda Boda riders represent M-KOPA's core customer base - Every Day Earners who make their living on a daily basis, with no salary or collateral to access conventional bank loans. For these riders, an electric motorbike costing upwards of KES 200,000 has been an impossible barrier, even as the economics make compelling sense.

M-KOPA removes this barrier through its proven asset financing model, offering daily, weekly, and monthly repayment options that mirror how riders actually earn. This is the same financing expertise that has enabled millions of Kenyans to access smartphones and digital financial service - now applied to transform mobility.

Partnering With Customers, Not Penalising Them

Unlike some irresponsible financing models in Kenya's mobility financing sector, where missed payments can result in bike confiscation and mounting debt, M-KOPA partners with its customers. The company's approach is grounded in clear consumer protection principles, premised on fairness and flexibility; transparent pricing with no hidden fees, and risk-reducing options that allow riders facing financial difficulty to return their motorbike, receive their deposit back, and walk away with no further obligation.

Through M-KOPA Cares, riders also receive battery and motorbike insurance, accidental death and disability cover, 24/7 customer support, GPS tracking and remote locking, two-year warranties, and safety-enhancing support services. This combination of financing, protection, and practical featuresenables riders to adopt electric mobility confidently and sustainably.

"We know that when our customers thrive, we also grow, reach more customers, and expand our impact," Njao added. "We believe in partnering with our customers."

Transforming Lives and Livelihoods

Armstrong, an M-KOPA e-mobility customer, describes the transformation:" Before getting this e-motorbike, I had no money at all. I was really struggling financially. But now, I can meet my daily needs, and I'm finally able to save some money, which was impossible before. My plan is to use my savings to open a small shop for my wife by the end of this year."

Environmental and Economic Impact

Electric motorbikes dramatically reduce emissions compared to petrol bikes, cutting harmful pollutants by over 90 percent. M-KOPA's broader climate strategy, which includes solar products and device refurbishment, has contributed to 2.03 million tonnes of CO₂e avoided across Kenya since 2010, with electric motorbikes forming a growing share of this progress.

M-KOPA's stringent OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) assessment process, evaluating supplier credibility, bike quality and safety, and post-sales capability - ensures riders receive reliable vehicles. Partnering with Ampersand, Roam, and Spiro, M-KOPA delivers durable electric motorbikes engineered for Kenyan roads.

The M-KOPA Mobility also supports Kenya's local economy by partnering with Kenyan manufacturers such as Roam, anchoring jobs across maintenance, charging, battery swapping, and assembly, and creating income opportunities for riders with limited access to formal finance.

Looking Ahead

With more than 5,000 electric motorbikes now on the road, M-KOPA is preparing to scale e-mobility financing significantly in 2026. The recent Mombasa launch marks the first step in a planned regional expansion beyond Nairobi County, deepening the company's contribution to cleaner transport, higher rider incomes, and long-term climate action.

"This milestone sets the pace for how clean mobility can expand without leaving Every Day Earners behind," Njao concluded.
