16th April 2013:  M-KOPA celebrates its 10,000th customer, Veronica Ekirapa from Kitale!  Veronica purchased her system from Branded Communication Agency, the nation’s #1 M-KOPA Solar dealer on 10th April.  Both Veronica and Branded Communication MD John Kimani were recognized in a ceremony at the Safaricom Retail Centre in Eldoret on 16th April.  Thanks to US Ambassador to Kenya Robert F. Godec, Governor Jackson Mandagor, and Safaricom GM of Consumer Business Peter Arina for attending the ceremony.  Thanks also to the Safaricom Retail Centre – Eldoret team for being the top Safaricom Retail Centre nationally!  

March 2013:  M-KOPA is now available in 400 locations nationwide, including 30 Safaricom retail centres.  The roll-out is featured in an article by Bloomberg.

December 2012:  M-KOPA concludes a Series B investment round of equity finance from existing investors, with a view to accelerate growth in Kenya.

19th October 2012: Safaricom and M-KOPA announce national partnership, with initial roll-out of marketing and distribution to Eldoret, Western, Nyanza and Kisii for Q4 2012 and rest of Kenya in first half 2013.  Read Safaricom’s press release.

4th October 2012: M-KOPA is featured in a Bloomberg article.

1st September 2012: M-KOPA featured in an article in The Economist on solar innovations in Africa.

8th June 2012: M-KOPA starts commercial sales of M-KOPA Solar in Kenya, with a focus on the Eldoret region.

30th January 2012: M-KOPA is awarded one of the African Enterprise Challenge Fund investments, under the “REACT” funding window for renewable energy services.  M-KOPA was selected as one of 25 winners from over 300 East African companies that applied.

8th December 2011: M-KOPA is awarded R&D funding to research new, low-cost applications of machine-to-machine technology, and starts to initiate projects with several partners to rapidly test and prove scalable consumer and enterprise-based models.

1st October 2011: M-KOPA concludes a Series A investment round of equity and debt financing from a leading group of emerging market investors, led by Gray Ghost Ventures (USA).  Other investors in the round include d.o.b Foundation (NL), Acumen Fund (USA), LGT Venture Philanthropy (Switz), Lundin Foundation (Canada).

30th June 2011: Successful results from customer pilot lead to investment proposition for full scale commercial launch.

15th October 2010: Live customer pilot of M-KOPA Solar starts in the Rift Valley.

1st July 2010:  Signal Point Partners Ltd secures convertible equity and R&D grant funding led by Shell Foundation (UK), DOEN Foundation (NL) and d.o.b foundation (NL) to test the world’s first solar leasing product using mobile money and embedded GSM technology.
